Abstract
The authors analysed the effect of the intravenous oxytocin induced third stage of labor in a controlled trial. Pregnant women were randomized to receive intravenous oxytocin after the delivery of the placenta(Group 1, n=608) or receive
intravenous
oxytocin immediately after the delivery of the baby(Group 2, n=516). There was no significant difference between two groups in postpartum bleeding. But those who received intravenous oxytocin immediately after the delivery of the baby had a lower
incidence of postpartum hemorrhage(2.6% versus 4.0%). Intravenous oxytocin immediately after delivery of the baby appears to be a useful alternative to traditional management of the third stage of labor.
